Cooling and Lubrication of High-speed Helical Gears

چکیده

Centrifugal compressor and turbine manufacturers are building machines that operate at increasingly higher speeds to reduce the size and cost of their equipment. Helical gears are commonly used to step down the speed of these machines to match nominal motor and generator speeds. The demand for higher compressor and turbine speeds has resulted in an increase in the maximum pitch line velocities of helical gears. Gear manufacturers have also increased the allowable tooth loading to reduce the size and cost of their equipment. The increase in pitch line velocities and tooth loadings has not been without problems. Several new and updated American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) standards have been published to educate end users on the issues with high-speed helical gears and to provide consistent criteria for rating gears. One of the key issues is lubrication and cooling. The purpose of this paper is to present some of the current methods for evaluating the lubrication and cooling requirements of high-speed helical gears to assist end users with selecting new gears and to provide a tool for solving gear problems.

Efficiency and temperature of spur gears using spray lubrication compared to dip lubrication

Increased machine efficiency is a requirement in today’s world and geared transmissions are no exception. A back-toback gear test rig was used to compare dip lubrication with spray lubrication regarding gearbox efficiency, mesh efficiency, gear temperature and surface roughness. Gears lubricated at the inlet of the mesh show a lower measured temperature when compared to spray lubrication at the...

Operating temperatures of oil-lubricated medium-speed gears: numerical models and experimental results

This paper investigates the effects of gear geometry, rotational speed and applied load, as well as lubrication conditions on surface temperature of high-speed gear teeth. The analytical approach and procedure for estimating frictional heat ̄ux and heat transfer coef®cients of gear teeth in high-speed operational conditions was developed and accounts for the effect of oil mist as a cooling medi...

Effect of Coating Materials on Wear in Internal Gears

Theoretical and experimental investigation of wear during coupling in internal gears coated with various polymeric coating materials was performed in this study. In the theoretical part of the study, Archards’ wear formulation was adapted to internal gears and wear behavior in various conditions was determined. Moreover, a fatigue and wear testing apparatus having similar working principle with...

II. TYPES OF GEAR LOSSES A. Speed Dependant Losses Windage losses: As gears rotate, lubricant is flung off the gear teeth in small oil droplets due to the centrifugal force

42 Abstract:In this study, a test methodology for measuring load-dependent (mechanical) power losses of helical gear pairs is developed. A high-speed four-square type test machine is adapted for this purpose. Several sets of helical gears having 3 different pressure angles are manufactured, and their power losses under dip lubricated conditions are measured at various speed and torque levels. A...

Cfd Simulation of Drive Unit Cooling Helps to Improve Reliability

T he cooling performance of oil is critical to the functionality and durability of vehicle drive units, such as transmissions and differentials. Traditionally, automotive R&D teams evaluate cooling performance by building prototypes, installing them in a vehicle, and conducting tests in wind tunnels. The use of free-surface multiphase flow modeling with high-performance computing (HPC) has made...
